O’s Notes: This 1977 release came at the pinnacle of the life of Chiaroscuro Records. The original liner notes cite it as the most significant of a new life for the label as they ventured into all types of jazz. Abdullah is one of South Africa’s finest pianists. The session includes happy songs like the opener, “Sister Rosie”, the edgy “Jabulani” which moves more towards the free side of bebop and the appropriately titled “Haji” meaning The Journey a relaxed fusion song. These 3 tracks display three faces of jazz in the late 1970s. Among the fine musicians are Hamiet Bluiett (baritone sax) and Don Cherry (t). It is a nice snapshot of from the period.
