O’s Notes: Pianist Orrin Evans leads a core rhythm section with bassist Robert Hurst and Marvin “Smitty” Smith on drums. It’s his first endeavor outside of The Bad Plus and he’s taken on a rich new life! Guest vocalists Jazzmeia Horn sings on “Big Small”, Sy Smith takes the mic for “Amazing Grace”, and Alita Moses sings “They Won’t Go When I Go”, to add beautiful color to the otherwise instrumental session. Bassist Buster Williams plays on two selections notably “The Good Life” featuring Larry McKenna (t-sax). Nicolas Payton (t) also appears on two tracks “Weezy” with Gary Thomas (fl), and “Feed The Fire” with Thomas on tenor sax.
