O’s Notes: Trombonist Lucian McGuiness and saxophonist Keijzer McGuiness lead a quintet with Matt McMahon (p), Mike Majkowski (b) and James Hauptmann (d). The headliners composed all seven selections for their debut recording. The layered harmonies of “Small Pictures” and “Apple S” display the warm sound of the horns. The use of the Fender Rhodes gives the music a retro 1970s feel. They impart a playful bounce on “GC For CP”, a syncopated number. This unification of an Australian and Dutch jazz-fusion musicians has promise.
