O’s Notes: Guitarist Trey Wright leads a trio with bassist Marc Miller and drummer, composer and co-producer Marlon Patton. They are an unselfish group that all contribute to a fine set without impinging on each other’s turf. We always felt like they were relaxed and in control of what they played. The exchanges were complex but mastered for our enjoyment. Patton’s work on the snare on “Quad” and the cymbals on “Hold Your Fire” elevate his contributions beyond just keeping time. Miller adds melodic phrases when called on while generally anchoring the rhythms. Wright provides the glue as well as the story for the music. He wrote seven of the ten songs. Patton adds one and they also do a couple of covers. This is a fine set of modern jazz-fusion.
