O’s Notes: Jazz bassoon is rarely attempted and is a challenging endeavor as a lead instrument in any genre. The late Daniel Smith zeroed in on blues and Latin-based jazz to successfully couple the dark tones of the typically classical music instrument. Rabinowitz does a fine job brightening the melodies by sharing the spotlight with guitarist Nat Harris. Rutland Khain (b) and Vince Ector (d) round out the well-knit quartet. They play a balanced mix of standards and Rabinowitz originals. Things really click on “When Sonny Gets Blue”, “So Do It”, “Kiki’s Theme” and “How Insensitive”. Michael and his band make the journey through Uncharted Waters a rather pleasing experience!
