O’s Notes: Dennis (sax) forms a quartet with Johannes Wallmann (p), Jesse Crawford (b) and Bill McClellan (d). They open up swinging with “Flatbush Blues” and continue to bounce along with “Union at 723”. Jesse steps up with strong solos on “Waiting For Oyarsa” and “Snowbound”. But this is Mitcheltree’s date and he navigates through the melodies like he is having a conversation, stating the purpose and underscoring the accents with his tenor. Dennis wrote nine of the tunes and includes a couple of mellow covers “Fleuette Africaine” and “Time After Time” that balance the set. It is done well.
