O’s Notes: Drummer Chris Massey assembles a quintet With Donald Malloy (t), Benjamin Drazen (sax), Evgeny Lebedev (p) and David Ostrem (b). They cone a variety of backgrounds but come together as one on Vibrainium. This is modern jazz with Massey drawing upon jazz legends Wayne Shorter, Elvin Jones and Art Blakey. He also includes covers of Corea’s “Windows” and Joe Henderson’s “Inner Urge”. But some of the best cuts are the originals, 3 from Massey and one each form Malloy and Drazen. Chris pays homage to the drummers who paved the way with a solo effort on “Chango”. We enjoyed “Galactus” and “Smooth”, positive signs that suggest we’ll hear a lot more from this crew.
