O’s Notes: Andy Milne (keyboards), Loren Stillman (sax), John Moon (vocals), Christopher Tordini (b) and Sean Rickman (d) are Dapp Theory. They are a progressive band that lays poetic rap on top of funky jazz rhythms. The best news for true jazz fans is that there is really some jazz here! We’ve been continuously impressed with work from pianist Andy Milne who started the band in 1998. Check the beats on “Bodybag For Martin” with guest artist Gord Grdina (oud), “If You Count It” and “After The Fact” for examples of their funky groove. The use of a live drummer and bass give them a lot of depth with improvisation. Moon has a great feel for interlacing his poems into the music. This style has been copied but not yet duplicated on the level represented here.
