O’s Notes: Julia Dollison and Kerry Marsh are young vocalists who came together around the music of Maria Schneider. Vertical Voices is their dream of singing her compositions. They emulate the melodies typically played by horns in a vocalese fashion. The renditions are beautiful as they capture all of the nuances. They don’t emulate the sound of the horns but the tones and harmony are there along with an emotional quotient that gives the music another dimension. Ben Monder (g), Frank Kimbrough (p), Jay Anderson (b) and Clarence Penn (perc) form a solid rhythm section that is seamless with Kerry and Julia. There are five tracks, all in excess of eight minutes. Our favorites are the “Journey Home” and “Dance Ilusória” a couple of gems in a satisfying, fresh jazz vocal set!
