O’s Notes: This is a rather creative solo piano effort from Steve Cohn. He is inspired by the paintings of the late Robert Rauschenberg whose work he describes as chaotic and a bit messy. Hence we have a free jazz set of twenty-four spontaneous selections that are rather eclectic. There are spots of brilliance but Cohn is dancing to his own beats here and many times the listener is left behind. But when locked on as with “Lose Yourself”, “Anspruchsvoll” and when he uses percussion as on “Prayer One”, it can be exhilarating!
