O’s Notes: The piano is perhaps the best instrument for solo entertainment with its full range. In the 1920 – 1930s, this was especially true when pianos were found almost everywhere. “Novelty” piano music, named after the tricky riffs inserted into the compositions, was written for solo piano, excluding lyrics. Master pianist Dick Hyman and his protege, John Sheridan team up to help us revisit the best from Novelty Piano. Included are pieces from Willie “The Lion” Smith, Zez Confrey, and Bob Zurke. There’s still a place for this music today, as it sparks cheerful spirits and a smile.
