O’s Notes: Blues in Red combines Haitian music with traditional jazz. The beats are complex and the rhythms are sweet making this fusion of styles a winner. While the title suggests a blues album, it is more a reference to the Haitian flag. Ambroise’s work on sax has slight blue tones but it is warm. Frederic Las Fargeas adds a strong contribution on piano next to Paul Beaudry (b), Dion Tucker (tb) and Obed Calvaire (d). There are Caribbean flavors but this is a unique sound. If this is what Haitian Jazz is about, we want to hear more!
