O’s Notes: Bobby Zankel plays alto sax and leads a free jazz ensemble with Jaleel Shaw (a-sax), Robin Eubanks (tb), Diane Monroe (violin), Somi Tonooka (p), Lee Smith (b), and Pheeroan Aklaff (d, perc). Ruth Naomi Floyd adds blue vocals on two selections. Bobby wrote all the compositions, arranged, and produced A Change of Destiny. The session was written as a score for The Spirits Break to Freedom, a story describing the lives of the nine slaves serving George and Martha Washington. Yes, you can hear the anger and pain in “Destiny” and evolving moods to a taste of freedom on “To Be A Human Being”. “Spirits Break To Freedom”, and “Naming Names” are other highlights.
