O’s Notes: Guitarist Phil Sargent leads a band with Greg Loughman (b), Mike Connors (d) and Aubrey Johnson (voice). John Funkhouser (p) plays on the title track and Brian Friedland (p, organ) joins for “8/31”. Aubrey, vocalese is like an additional instrument and she shines on “Powerplay” a tine that starts out in a mellow mode before morphing into grunge. It is one of several songs with multiple personalities. Sargent’s melodies define the mode taking us from a Metheny-like fusion to progressive rock almost instantaneously. We preferred the relaxed phases.
