O’s Notes: Kendra sings the Earthy music of Abbey Lincoln. She sings out front of the instrumentation, which is never congested. The band is Frank Kimbrough (p), Dean Johnson (b), Tony Moreno (d), Ben Monder (g), Billy Drewes (horns) and Gary Versace (accordion). There is always a clear view of Shank’s voice. She’s singing with the same gutsy spirit as Lincoln with blue tones and lots of improvisation. This is easier said than done but Kendra does an excellent job interpreting Abbey’s songbook. Lincoln fans will be impressed.
