O’s Notes: Erik is a Bay-area based jazz trumpeter who falls into a select group of young musicians that is breathing new life into jazz. That group is engaged in active performances, education and boundaryless composition. For Anti-Mass Jekabson visits chamber jazz with a ‘stringtet’ that includes Dayna Stephens (sax) and the venerable Mads Tolling on violin. His inspiration came from some of the permanent pieces in San Francisco’s DeYoung Museum. The blending of modern jazz with neo-classical bodes well and is indeed a successful endeavor that begs your consideration.
