O’s Notes: Aspiration“is the latest abstract creation from Japanese pianist Satoko Fujii. She invites one of the masters in free jazz space, trumpeter and composer Wadada Leo Smith to the party. He locks horns with his Japanese counterparts in the same genre. Trumpeter Natsuki Tamura and electronics wizard Iuke Mori round out the quartet. Mori’s futuristic sounds fill in the spaces between the free flowing improvisations of the other musicians. This album is more tranquil than many of their past efforts yet continues to push the envelope combining east, west, past and future and celebrating 20 years on Libra Records.
