O’s Notes: Blue Keys is a blues statement and a showcase for Calvin to display his guitar prowess. He’s backed by the polished rhythm section of Henry Franklin (b), Babatunde Lea (congas), producer Gregory Howe (p), Mike Hughes (d) and Mike Blankenship (organ). Trombonist Steve Turre does fine work, notably on “Peregrines Dive” that also features solos from guest saxophonist Gary Bartz, and Keys. “At Arrival”, “Ajafika” and the title track are additional standouts.
