O’s Notes: The second release for pianist Charles Chen is hot, including top talents like Randy Brecker (t), Bob Sheppard & Lawrence Feldman (t-sax), Mike Richmond (b), and Adam Nussbaum (d). Chen engages his entire team on Building Characters, and they are up for it! “Zhang Fei, Fierce Warrior” has a strong solo by Richman, “If On A Winter Night, A Traveler” features Brecker, Sheppard, and Chen. Charles also shines on “Colossus Of Rhodes”. We also enjoyed Bob’s warm sax on “Stardust”. This is a strong statement that captures the old, the new, and Chen’s imagination across eight fresh compositions.
