O’s Notes: Saxophonist Jimmy Woods was a troubled man when this session was recorded in 1963. His experiences as an African American during that time come out in his music, perhaps his only vehicle for safe expression. You can hear high levels of passion and anger surrounded by warmth. The emotions were not only those from racial discord but also from the challenge of supporting a family, raising children and balancing that with his love for music. Conflict, the title and the song are fitting and telling. The sextet includes strong performances from pianist Andrew Hill and Elvin Jones on drums.
