O’s Notes: Upon arriving to the New York jazz scene, Ian was inspired by Steve Lacy to ‘tell a story’ with his solos. It was good advice and he has put it to practice! Carey goes beyond rapid-fire notes on his improvisations; he puts context and feeling into each passage. His tone is crisp and warm, inviting us into his zone. Ian leads his quintet through nine new compositions including a unique cover of “Just Friends”. They open with “Tom/Tom”, a swinging syncopated tune that welcomes into Carey’s world. We preferred the upbeat tunes like the title track with layered brass effects. The music is complex but not edgy. It swings and is easy to embrace. We enjoyed the journey and look forward to hearing more from Carey.
