O’s Notes: Lee was at the forefront if the cool jazz and avant-garde movement in 1949. He has stuck with his mode and remains a creative genius on sax, able to create and recreate melodies on the same tunes time and time again. It is his ability to breathe new life into tired old tunes that have made him timeless and valued on the jazz scene. Konitz joined a young trio, Florian Weber (p), Jeff Denson (b) and Ziv Ravitz (d) for this set, a collection of all new songs except “Stella By Starlight”. We liked “As the Smoke Clears” best. They inspire each other and usher the rebirth of cool jazz into the new millennium.
