O’s Notes: The late Etta Jones started singing with tenor sax player, Houston Person in 1968 and they performed and recorded many fine sessions up to her death in 2001. This is a live set recorded at New York’s ‘Salt Peanuts’ club during 1980. Sonny Phillips (organ) and Frankie Jones (d) round out the band. Etta sings on half of the tunes with her characteristic bluesy voice shadowed by Person. The balance is instrumentals featuring Houston’s throaty tones. They sound good together and this new release captures their essence well.
