O’s Notes: John is not Brazilian but fell in love with the people and the music when visiting his wife’s homeland in 2002. This served as the inspiration for Down in Brazil, a collection of a dozen bossa nova classics sung mostly in Brazilian Portuguese. Dukich keeps the pace slow and the arrangements fit his style. The celebration is enhanced with appearances by first call musicians like Don Braden (sax), Dave Stryker (g), Bob Baldwin (keyboards), Roy Assaf (p), Claudio Roditi (t), Café Da Silva (perc) and drummer Karl Latham. The talent is not wasted on this very soothing set.
