O’s Notes: The Joymakers are an octet led by Colin Hancock (cornet, sax, tb, vocals). David Jellema (cl, Sax, cornet, vocals), Lauryn Gould (sax, vocals), Dylan Blackthorn (p, accordion), Westin Borghesi (banjo), Shane Dickens (p), Ryan Gould (b), and Ryan Neubauer (d). They present their debut, Down Where The Bluebonnets Grow. The music is early jazz-swing that was common in Texas during the 1920s-30s. Most of the tunes are swinging instrumentals but Gould sings the blues on couple of tunes notably “I’m A Thousand Miles From Home”. Hancock and Jellema also sing a couple of songs. We enjoyed the raspy lyrics on “That’s A Serious Thing”.
