O’s Notes: Bassist Chris Colangelo puts together a fine band to perform seven originals and two covers of modern jazz/bebop. The band members are: John Beasley (p), Steve Hass (d), Bob Sheppard (sax), Benny Clatworthy (sax, fl) and Zane Musa (sax). They vary tempos from the racing pace of “The Ubiquitous One” to the more relaxed “Elaine’s Song”. That approach keeps the listener engaged. In all cases they shine with Chris anchoring a solid rhythm section complimenting the brass/flute melodies. We enjoyed the heavy syncopation on “Watts Important” suitably dedicated to one of the finest jazz drummers Jeff ‘Taint’ Watts. We also liked the swinging finale “From Dark to Light”. Colangelo is no stranger to the jazz scene especially for LA based jazz fans but this is first solo effort in over 10 years. It is a winner!
