O’s Notes: Howe (p) takes the stage with Neal Starkey (b) and Jerry Fields (d) to form a polished trio. They take a turn at ten of Ellington’s gems. Ted’s arrangements are fresh and renewed creations of the originals. “It Don’t Mean A Thing” and “Caravan” are excellent examples. He uses blues, Latin, bossa nova, swing, stride and bebop to flavor the tunes. The collection is a true testimony of respect to one of music’s greatest composers. It is well executed and performed by the trio.
