O’s Notes: Portuguese vocalist, composer Sara Serpa describes her life experiences since moving to the USA on Encounters And Collisions. Her supporting band is a trio with Ingrid Laubrock (sax), Angelica Sanchez (p), and Erik Friedlander (cello). Her encounters expose the insular views and insensitivities of many Americans. Her story is enlightening yet disturbing on many fronts. The music reflects the moods and emotions she has endured. It’s the life of a budding musician full of experiences: first time childbirth, an unwed mother, the unexpected loss of her father, defining herself by her music, and becoming a New Yorker, in Harlem. Over 18 years she’s added many dimensions to her life yet still feels like an outsider. This is a passionate story with matching music offering a unique perspective.
