O’s Notes: Entity is a recording of the Satoko Fujii Orchestra, a thirteen-piece ensemble that includes guitarist Nels Cline, Tony Malaby on tenor sax, trumpeter Natsuki Tamura, and trombonist Joe Fiedler. Fujii (p) composed all of the music. The orchestrated free jazz is quite different from her typical small groupings as they maintain some sense of order underneath the free improvisation. There are several band configurations with many passages focused on just a few instruments making this quite dynamic and accessible. Our favorite of the five lengthy selections is “Flashback”.
