O’s Notes: Escape Velocity is the latest release from Theo Croker, an ambitious young musician who is not afraid to experiment. His ambition pays off. There is generous use of electronics for layering and Theo’s use of the wah-wah on his trumpet brings a unique voice to the mix. Eric Wheeler (b), Michael King (keyboards) and Kassa Overall (d) form a solid rhythm section behind him. The grove is futuristic funky, chaotic and on point, best exemplified by “Raise Your Vibrations”, “In Orbit”, “It’s Gonna Be Alright” and “Meditations”. Croker should be around for a while bringing it! PS: We were inspired hearing Theo live at the Jazz Standard in New York last month backing his mentor Dee Dee Bridgewater. He was excellent on a different theme with Dee Dee showing versatility and poise.
