O’s Notes: This is the third volume of Russell’s Ethnomusicology, a mix of rap, hip-hop and jazz with a message and a groove. It’s an urban sound with tight funky beats. Russell plays trumpet and employs a band that includes percussion, brass, DJs on turntables, guest vocalists (rappers) and a strong rhythm section. He also gets help from vibraphonist Stefon Harris. Gunn wrote most of the songs and his urban formula is right on target with hints of Tom Browne’s early hits. Volume three continues the theme with upbeat, racy and relaxed hits.
