O’s Notes: Trombonist, composer and arranger Ed Neumeister assembles two quartets for Exploration. The 11-part title track features bassist Drew Gress, pianist Fritz Pauer, and John Hollenbeck on drums. Gary Versace and Tom Rainey replace Pauer and Hollenbeck on “Fawg-it #1”, “Fawg-it #2”, and “Pickled Ginger”. As always, Neumeister deploys a wide array of plungers and mutes to create a wide landscape. The music is highly improvised, dynamic, free jazz with lots of air infused.
