O’s Notes: Big Band Latin jazz can be a tremendously powerful and engaging experience. Extreme Heat is just that! They start out blazing with “Manteca” and then show their balance with the more mellow “Artistry in Rhythm” as well as on “Black Orpheus” later in the set. The crisp brass scents of “Summer Time Down South”, a cover of “Rise” and the harmonizing on “Calvero” are among the songs that make this CD sizzle.
