O’s Notes: Tenor saxophonist, composer Rich Halley is combustible on Fire Within, a quartet recording with Matthew Shipp (p), Michael Bisio (b), and Newman Taylor Baker (d). This is Act 3 for this quartet and the fire is burning hot! They feed off each other in this heavily improvised studio session. The opening title track is a strong statement that sets the mood of the 5 tracks. Bisio opens “Infrared” a tune that builds slowly before Halley’s raging sax leads. Take a break “Through Still Air” to prepare for “Following the Stream”, the best of the set featuring Baker.
