O’s Notes: Junk Box was new to us but its members are very familiar on the free jazz scene. John Hollenbeck (perc), Satoko Fujii (p) and Natsuki Tamura (t) are well-known avant garde musicians and they gel well as a trio. Tamura’s melodies are very inviting on “Looking Out Of The Window” and we really enjoyed “Your Neighbors” which contained snippets of many popular tunes. Fujii wrote all of the music and leaves enough air to allow each musician’s thoughts to surface. “Cat’s Nap” was an unusual ballad that took us into the brain of …a napping cat! Overall, we found this session to be more than just free improvisation; it made sense.
