O’s Notes: Perhaps one of the most underrated jazz musicians, Sonny played what he felt and that sentiment resonated through his sax. This is easily understood on these two sessions recorded in 1972. The first, Goin’ Down Slow, includes a large ensemble including strings while the second, So Doggone Good is a quartet with Hampton Hawes (p), Reggie Johnson (b) and Lenny McBrowne (d). Stitt plays his own style, using dynamics and tempo to convey expression. This is a nice sampling of his work.
