O’s Notes: Rabbi Greg Wall plays reeds and leads a jazz quartet with Shai Bachar (p), Dave Richards (b) and Aaron Alexander (d). For HA’OROT: The Lights Of RavKook. Rabbi Avraam Izchak HaCohen Kook was one of the most inspirational Jewish thinkers of the 20th century. Rabbi Itzchak Marmostein, a Kook scholar delivers the spoken word over thirteen tracks. The beats are funky and the message is centered on repairing the world’s problems. We liked “The One Who Seeks The Good”, “Renewal” and “Freedom” best. A few of the songs inch into free jazz space but otherwise the music is straight ahead, klezmer or jazz funk that matches the theme of the poetry. The lyrics are in English and Hebrew but the liner notes include translation. We were pleasantly surprised with the music and the message that provide both entertainment and inspiration.
