O’s Notes: Highway Rider is a formidable effort consisting of two full discs of intricate modern jazz. The music was written, arranged and orchestrated by Mehldau with support from a very talented set of musicians including a full orchestra. The core band is Joshua Redman (sax), Larry Grenadier (b), Jeff Ballard (d), and Matt Chamberlain (d) with Brad playing piano. The music is wonderful and easy to enjoy – all fifteen selections. We preferred the larger soundstage of the second CD. It is not the rock-based fusion of some Mehldau trios. This is more along the lines of Moodswings, an earlier recording with Redman. Take some time to absorb it and you will be rewarded!
