O’s Notes: Saxophonist Owen Broder engages a strong band including Riley Mullerian (t), Carmen Staaf (p), Barry Stephenson (b), and Bryan Carter (d). The inspiration for this work is Johnny Hodges, the lead alto saxophonist of the Duke Ellington Jazz Orchestra. They get right down to business on the opener “Royal Garden Blues”. They swing hard on “Take The A-Train” then warm us with “Ballade For The Very Sad and Very Tired Lotus Eaters”. Hodges: Front & Center is an enjoyable album on all fronts!
