O’s Notes: Conductor, composer and producer Alister Spence enlists legendary free jazz, pianist Satoko Fujii to perform with a largely Japanese, brass-laden orchestra for“Imagine Meeting You Here. It was recorded live, in concert at Big Apple jazz club in Kobe, Japan, September 10, 2017. The abstract program is divided into five movements: “Imagine”, “Meeting”, “You”, “Here” and “Postscript”. “Meeting” is the most edgy, including chants and lots of counter phrasing while “Postscript” is most addressable. Spence should be applauded for his creativity and adaption of free jazz to a big band format with clarity and precision.
