O’s Notes: This dynamic performance features a polished quintet with Mike Wofford (p), Bob Magnusson (b), Joe La Barbara (a) and two of the finest jazz alto sax players on the jazz scene: Jake Fryer and Bud Shank. All of the tunes were recorded on the first take and the result is an abundance of spontaneous energy. The program is nine popular standards anchored by the rhythm section so the dueling saxes can explode and indeed they do! They shine on “Breaking Loose”, “Caravan”, “In Time Lord” and “Bopping With Bud”. While the brass leads the way, there is ample space for the rest of the band to capture some if the spotlight, especially Wofford on several occasions. These fellas can cook!
