O’s Notes: John does an extraordinary job leading with his trombone on In The Pocket. There are nine tracks, seven classics and two originals, each with a warm throaty melody emanating from the trombone. Whether bouncing along on “I Could Write A Book” or relaxing on “In A Sentimental Mood”, things gel nicely. There is a tight rhythm section and a very nice performance from Hugh Ragin (trumpet/flugelhorn) who provides a great complement to Hines on three of the songs. The set is balanced with “A Nightingale Sang In Berkley Square” featuring vocals by Angela Holley.
