O’s Notes: Christian McBride is one of the most sought after jazz bassists as a sideman and he also shines as a leader. For Inside Straight he employs in two quintets. Peter Martin (p), Carl Allen (d), Steve Wilson (sax) and Warren Wolf (vibes perform on six of the selections. Christian Sands (p) and Ulysses Owens, Jr. (d) replace Martin and Allen for the other two tracks. Both teams swing hard with an infectious groove that is typical of McBride’s work. We like it and hope to catch them live.
