O’s Notes: The late drummer Tony Allen made and indelible mark with his Afro-jazz, a combination of Nigerian Highlife and American jazz. Producer Adrian Younge resurfaces some of Allen’s finest on the Jazz Is Dead series. The title may not be appealing to jazz lovers, but the music is certainly cool. The 18th edition is funky, jazz-fusion that suggests that jazz is indeed alive. If you like it fast, furious, and funky, Tony Allen serves up a fine appetizer. “Makoto”, “No End” and “Ebun” are fine examples of Allen’s syncopated mastery.
