O’s Notes: This is a throwback release of saxophonist Hank Mobley’s 1957 release Jazz Message #2. It was recorded in two sessions. The first includes Lee Morgan (t), Hank Jones, Doug Watkins (b), and Art Taylor (d). The second session has Mobley with Donald Byrd (t), Barry Harris (p), Watkins, and Kenny Clarke (d). They swing on “Blues No.2”, “Thad’s Blues” with a fine piano solo, and “Doug’s Minor B’Ok”. While this recording captures a young Mobley, he’s already strutting his stuff and the accompaniment is pristine.
