O’s Notes: Joel A. Martin is a pianist, producer, composer and arranger who brings us a celebration of the heritage and art of the Armenian people, Jazzical Komitas – Passion of Fire. Martin reimagines the songs of Armenian composers like Komitas Vartapet while retaining their beauty. He opens with the adventurous “Dance of Echmiadzin” leading us through the final days of the pandemic. The voices are harmonious on “Hoy Nazan”. There is peaceful, solo piano on “Garun a” & “Baleni”, duo piano on “Soldier Song”, and symphonic aura on “China’s Es” with the Andrew Smith Strings Orchestra and flutist Pamela Sklar.
