O’s Notes: Paul formed the Consort to explore the rich and natural textures of sound. He has incorporated elements of Africa, South America and Asia to arrive at a peaceful world jazz sound. In this case Winter is inspired by the natural beauty of Japan specifically the Shigaraki Mountains and the exhibits of the Miho Museum. The musicians are mostly Japanese playing traditional Japanese reeds, Paul McCandless (sax, oboe), Shumei Taiko Ensemble (d) and Yanglin Lamu (voice). The sound is very soothing and is among the better nature recordings that we have heard.
