O’s Notes: This is contemporary big band music that is tough to characterize and easier to appreciate. John wrote these tunes to be accessible to a broad audience and it is if you have an appetite for random thoughts. Theo Blackman adds vocals, spoken word and electronics to modernize the session while the full power of the 18-piece Jazz Big band Graz, definitely makes a statement. The sounds approximate nature, animals, and abstract thoughts that at times borders on free jazz. Our favorite is the mysterious “Abstinence”. This CD definitely places big band in a different light.
