O’s Notes: Lalo invites some of his friends, some excellent musicians for this set. James Morrison (t) leads the melody on “Besame Mucho” with crisp notation and a gentle Latin swing. Dennis Budmir (g) and Lalo (p) share the melody on “Old Friends”, a warm ballad. James Moody joins the party leading “Free Parking” on sax that also includes a fine bass solo from Brian Bromberg. Alex Acuña handles percussion providing the final spices that make things just right. Everyone gets into the act for Schifrin renewing these nine classics to make this an enjoyable set. They close with a rejuvenating “Hymn to freedom” featuring Moody on sax. Amen.
