O’s Notes: Sometimes the magic is in the venue and such is the case at (Live at) Maureen’s Jazz Cellar, named in honor of the late, great jazz vocalist Maureen Budway. Maureen’s serves as a creative and inspirational venue for vocalist Tania Grubbs and her quintet featuring David Budway (p), Tania’s husband Jeff Grubbs (b), Ron Affif (g) and, James Johnson III (d). The Nyack, NY club has an intimate audience supporting its first recording. Tania’s voice is soft and inviting on “The Peacocks” including a fine guitar solo from Affif. She adds a taste of bebop scatting on “Orinthology” with fine accompaniment especially from her hubby and Afiff.
